Ancient village Phuoc Tich seeks to boost tourism

PSNews - Phuoc Tich ancient village is located in Phong Dien district, Thua Thien Hue province. Although it was recognized as a national relic since 2009, the beautiful ancient village of central Vietnam has not been invested in properly in order to boost its tourism potential.

  • Hanoi’s craft villages lack highly-skilled labourers

Phuoc Tich ancient village currently preserves 26 "ruong" ancient wooden houses, 12 ancestral houses and 13 other relics, such as Phuoc Buu Pagoda, Lieu Hanh shrine, Cay Thi temple, pottery kilns, and so on. Despite its large potential, the tourism development of Phuoc Tich village has still remained limited.

According to local residents, visitors only come to the village in festival seasons, when cultural and artistic activities are organized. In the rest time of the year, few visit the village.

Mr. Ho Van Dien, the owner of the 100-year-old "ruong" ancient house said that, his house is always open to public, but it is very rare to see visitor coming in weekdays. Sometimes, there is only a group visiting in a week long.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai, a visitor from Quang Tri, came to Phuoc Tich for the festival "the scents of the ancient village". She was surprised by the unique and ancient beauty of Phuoc Tich villages and "ruong" houses.

Although she and her group really enjoyed the poetic beauty of the ancient village, but they did not stay there for long, as the village did not have good tourist services nor attractive tourism products, she said.

According to Mr. Nguyen Hong Thang, Head of the management board of Phuoc Tich ancient village, there are nearly 30 "ruong" houses in the village, of which 7 were restored and 8 will be restored in 2018. Each is provided with 400 million VND - 700, under the project "Preserving and promoting the value of Hue garden house" of the People's Committee of Thua Thien Hue province.

Apart from the preservation, the management board in collaboration with the local authorities tried to launch a number of tourist services and products, such as home-stay, rowing on the O Lau river, making  pottery, along with other cultural and artistic activities during festival seasons. However, the number of tourists coming to Phuoc Tich ancient village is still modest, Mr. Thang said.

In particular, in 2017, Phuoc Tich village welcomed 2,700 visitors who booked their tours at the management board. Meanwhile, the festival "The scents of the ancient village" and "Hue Festival 2018" have helped the village to attract about 50,000 visitors.

Tourism experts suggested that, in order to boost tourism, Phuoc Tich ancient village should develop typical tourist products and connect itself to various tours, or nearby traditional villages and resorts so as to attract visitors.
