At the beginning of the program, the students watched video clips on the Da Nang Fire Fighting Police, several fire incidents in the city, firefighting equipment as well as ways to survive in case of fire.

Despite the summer heat on the day of the program, the “junior firefighters” were eager to learn various interesting and useful information and skills that will help them very much in fire incidents.

During exercises, the students faced various challenges, including escaping from tall buildings on fire by ropes, escaping from burning areas full of smokes and poisonous gases and using fire extinguishers.

Among those challenges, escaping from fire by ropes may be the most difficult. The assumed scenario was that the 3rd floor of Nguyen Chi Thanh Secondary School (Man Thai ward, Son Tra district) was burnt due to electricity failure; and the children had to go down safely onto the ground with a rope. The exercise was to help children successfully handle fire incidents in tall buildings.

For the young students, it was a real psychological challenge as they had to go down with a rope from a height of more than 10 meters. “I find this course very useful. In all experiences, I like the task of escaping from tall buildings by swinging the wire. It helps me overcome the fear of height,” Nguyen Thi Ngan (a 7th grade student of Nguyen Chi Thanh Secondary School) said.

Nguyen Manh Thanh, a student from Nguyen Chi Thanh Secondary School, said: “The program has provided us with useful knowledge about fire fighting and escape skills. For the first time I have used portable fire extinguishers to put out the fire and escape from the height of more than 10m.”

“There are many apartment buildings in Son Tra district. Therefore, it is very important to give instructions, knowledge and skills of firefighting to students. After participating in this training program, they can tell their family members about the knowledge they have learned in order to take measures to protect themselves at home and minimize the damages caused by fire and explosion,” said Major Ho Phu Quoc, Deputy Head of Fire Police Station No.3.

At the same time, the program aimed to raise local pupils’ awareness of fire prevention, to help them better understand the fire prevention, and thus raise sense of responsibility for fire prevention and fighting activities as well as to protect themselves and their families from fire incidents.
