22 delegations participate in APPF-26 in Hanoi

PSNews - 22 member parliamentary delegations (including Vietnam) with 355 international guests had registered for APPF-26 in Hanoi, said Nguyen Van Giau, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly at a conference on January 17.

He added that the 26th Annual Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF-26) would see the participation of 7 delegations led by chairmen of congress or equivalents, 10 headed by vice-chairman–level officials or equivalents, the General Secretary of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), and the General Secretary of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA).

Some delegations are large, for example Indonesia with 50 delegates, Japan with 36 delegates, and Cambodia with 26 delegates.

Additionally, this year’s Forum will also see the participation of senior international guests, including former IPU Chairman Saber Chowdhury; IPU Chairwoman Gabriela Cuevas Barron; IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong; Honorary President of APPF Hirofumi Nakasone, Secretary General of ASEAN, Secretary General of AIPA.

Established in 1993, APPF now has the 27 members, namely Australia, Cambodia, Canada, Costa Rica, Chile, Colombia, China, Ecuador, Fiji, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Marshalls, Mexico, Micronesia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Thailand, USA and Vietnam. The Brunei Parliament participates in the event as an observer.

APPF meetings aim to increase exchange and cooperation among parliamentarians in the region on issues of culture, security and politics, economics and trade, and address regional issues, contributing to promoting peace, stability, sustainable development and prosperity in the whole region. APPF is also a channel backing the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.
